Becoming a National Health Service instead of a sickness service: Lessons from the Liver
    Peter Cambouropoulos
    – Digital Lead for Modernising our Hospitals and Health Services, Hampshire Hospitals NHS FT

Cirrhosis of the liver is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, and is on the increase. In part this is because in the early stages, the disease is silent, but evidence suggests that patients may respond to intervention if caught early. Here we describe our intention to set up an entirely new service to find and treat symptomless patients in Hampshire, by applying intelligence to data that is already being routinely collected in primary care. We believe this could revolutionise our approach to treating this disease.

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust advances digital-first strategy with a new EPR
Jane Saunders – Programme Director for EPR and Digital Transformation, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust

Discover how Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is making progress with its 10-year plan and progressing its digital maturity – centred around an electronic patient records system.  Hear how they rolled out the centre piece of their digital transformation project successfully and are realising immediate benefits for their patients and staff. You’ll also find how they worked in partnership with Allscripts, what the future roadmap looks like at Maidstone and how the system is simplifying their processes and enabling them to:

    • Get rapid and simple access to information, where and when needed, across clinical systems by providing a single point of access (including connecting the EPR Sunrise to the Kent and Medway Care Record).
    • Developing ward-based tracking boards with notifications to provide at a glance information to help improve clinical outcomes
    • See significant reduction in time taken, in some cases as much as eight hours per day, by reducing manual input of data and supporting more effective processes
    • Achieving a big bang go live in the context of major pandemic challenges, and create 4 million electronic documents to date reducing overall reliance on paper
    • Continued optimisation of the system and how competing priorities are managed whilst continuing to progress with the next phase of the EPR
    • Collaborate with other Allscripts sites across the region

Jane will also be able to talk about the Trust’s future plans, which include implementation of ePMA, electronic discharge notifications, and Sunrise Surgical Care.

    Digitalisation of clinical trials
Dr Lenaic Williams – Project Manager (BRC Digital theme) and BRC Informatics Compliance Officer
Digital Services, The Royal Marsden NHS FT
Lisa Emery – CIO, The Royal Marsden NHS FT

With around 600 clinical studies open at any one time and about 170 new studies opened each year, the Royal Marsden Hospital is one of the top 4 cancer centres in the world. Together with the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), RMH houses the only Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) dedicated specifically to cancer in the UK and operates across three clinical trial centres employing 400 FTE.

Faced with growing storage facility costs and needing to satisfy the audit demands of MHRA and FDA for a more efficient, more secure and more auditable process- the clinical research team at RMH decided to search for a digital system that also delivered easier working across sites, enabled remote working and provided capability for metrics. RMH teamed up with Hyland to design and create a solution based on the OnBase content management platform and have now gone live with electronic clinical trial management.

Helping community services articulate their value
Clara Gilfillan – Operational Lead for Community Nursing, East Suffolk and North Essex NHS FT

Moving more clinical care out of hospital and into the community is one of the main objectives of the NHS long term plan, but community services have often been overlooked by multiple funding initiatives as they are less visible than hospitals and primary care services.
Increasing numbers of patients are being referred to community nurses – the ward without walls – while the number of disillusioned district nurses are leaving the profession at an alarming rate with 48% fewer nurses in 2021 compared to 2010.

In addition, providing safe, efficient care has been additionally hampered by a lack of supporting technology, until now.
Clara Gilfillan has put community services at the front and centre of digital transformation at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS FT. By using e-scheduling software, Clara has helped:

    • Raise the profile of community nursing by becoming a data-driven service
    • Give system leaders visibility of capacity and demand across all their community services, and
    • Provide continuity of health and social care for patients who receive clinical care where they want to receive it – at home.
