Cisco unified computing in Austria

  • 31 March 2010

Klinikum Wels-Grieskirchen, the largest healthcare provider in Northern Austria, has deployed a Unified Computing System from Cisco.

The system will be deployed a data centre that covers two hospitals serving more than 600,000 patients. It will also act as a hosting aggregation point for the region’s existing Medical Data Exchange Solution (MDES), which provides a platform for sharing medical records online.

The decision to move to the system was made by the hospital and x-tension, the company to which Klinikum outsourced its IT operations in 2001.

The latest implementation of Cisco’s Unified Computing System is part of an ongoing relationship between Cisco and x-tention, which also installed Cisco MDES at Klinikum Wels-Grieskirchen in 2008.

The deployment will accommodate Klinikum’s increasing data storage requirements, which are growing at more than 60% each year, and enable the MDES platform to be deployed to new sites more quickly.

Elmar Flamme, chief information officer at Klinikum Wels-Grieskirchen, said: “Combining the Cisco Unified Computing System with our existing Cisco MDES platform has directly improved the care we are able to deliver to our patients.

“While MDES first revolutionised our service by making all medical information readily available across all sites, the Cisco Unified Computing System has taken the service to the next level.

"[It allows] all these services to be deployed and managed in new sites quickly and easily, while significantly improving the performance of all applications.

“Additionally, it significantly reduces the maintenance and life cycle refresh costs of our data center, as well as making service provision much more efficient.”
