Liege transmits live operation in 3D
- 30 March 2010
The University of Liege has claimed a European first by transmitting a live neurosurgical operation to an audience in 3D.
The operation was performed at the University Hopsital of Liege and watched by members of the public in a cinema in Sauvenier, 10km away.
Spectators were able to speak to the neurosurgeon, Professor Didier Martin, throughout the event, which was organised for the ImageSante festival.
The broadast required collaboration between the university, 16 companies, and TWIST, the walloon network for audiovisual and multimedia technologies.
Stereoscopic streams of data were transmitted to the cinema at the rate of 500 MBt/s, or half the capacity of each optical fibre used.
