Leicester to use WinScribe digital dictation

  • 8 October 2008

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust will introduce SRC’s WinScribe digital dictation systems in a bid to meet Department of Health sustainability targets and improve patient experience.

The trust will introduce the systems to 800 users over a series of phases. The initial phase will see the SRC WinScribe solution deployed to over 185 users in the Surgical Services Directorate.

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) includes Glenfield Hospital, Leicester General Hospital and Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The agreement is the first major contract awarded under the East Midlands resource hub digital dictation framework agreement which was won by SRC following a competitive tender process.

The software will automatically prioritise critical dictations and securely distribute them to relevant secretaries using the WinScribe interface. This will enable the trust to cut waiting times and improve document turnaround times.

The trust said the solution represents “a dramatic improvement on the current tape based system”, and will be used to route all the trusts dictations between authors and secretaries and corresponding transcriptions back to authors.

Miranda Pilkington, general manager of the efficiency unit at UHL, said: “We are dedicated to improving patient care and achieving and sustaining the Department of Health’s 18 week programme.”

“The SRC WinScribe solution enables us to build on the work we have already started and accelerate document turnaround times by simplifying the transfer of dictations and work across the trust. The ability to see the flow of work removes both risk and frustration, helping us work collaboratively to remove and eliminate typing backlogs,” said Pilkington.

The system to be provdied includes SRC’s NotifyMe software module, which enables doctors to be rapidly notified, via email or SMS messaging, that urgent dictations have been transcribed and are ready for checking.

The trust said that the efficiencies gained by the rationalisation of its document creation process, would help improve patient care and help it meet Department of Health sustainability targets.

Under the terms of the agreement, SRC will manage all of the training requirements to ensure that users have a comprehensive understanding of the solution and can quickly migrate to the new way of working.

The East Midlands resource hub digital dictation framework agreement is available to all NHS Trusts across Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire County & Rutland and Northamptonshire.
