Professor Jonathan Benger is leaving his role as acting national CCIO at NHS England to become the new chief medical officer at the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

In an NHS England internal bulletin Dr Tim Ferris, director of transformation, said: ā€œJonathan has played a significant role in NHS Digitalā€™s leadership in recent years, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, and I have appreciated his expertise and advice.ā€


Dr Gareth Thomas, the long-serving deputy national CCIO at NHS England is also departing to take up a new role as digital innovation director across the Greater Manchester health and care system.

The new role is a joint appointment between Health Innovation Manchester and NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care.


Mark Cubbon, current NHS England chief delivery officer, has been appointed as chief executive at Manchester University Foundation Trust. He is due to begin leading the largest NHS provider in England in spring next year.


The managing director of Wiltshire Health and Care, Douglas Blair, has been appointed as chief executive at Gloucestershire Health and Care Foundation Trust. He will join the community and mental health trust after outgoing CEO Paul Roberts retires in March 2023.


NHS England has appointed Sarah-Jane Marsh as its new national director of urgent and emergency care and deputy chief operating officer.

Marsh will leave her role as chief executive officer at Birmingham Womenā€™s and Childrenā€™s Foundation Trust, a move announced by Steve Barclay last month at the NHS Providers conference and to NHS England staff.


Julian Hartley, current chief executive at The Leeds Hospitals NHS Trust, has been appointed as the next chief executive of NHS Providers. Hartley will take up the new role on 1 February 2023.

Chair of NHS Providers Ron Kerr said: ā€œI am delighted that Julian is joining us to take up this very important and challenging role.Ā NHS Providers is a successful and well-regarded membership organisation.

ā€œI know Julian will be an excellent chief executive who will lead the next stage of our work, delivering our strategic vision and helping members ā€“ together with their system partners ā€“ to drive improvements for patients, service users and the communities they serve during what is a period of unprecedented challenge for health and care services.ā€


NHS Supply Chainā€™s commercial executive, Andy Windsor, announced his departure just days after it was revealed the procurement agency is dramatically changing its plans for its operating model.

Windsor, who joined in December 2021, told staff and stakeholders on a webinar he will be leaving in January to emigrate to New Zealand.


Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust has appointed Mike Bateson, Karen Green and Robert Copley to its Council of Governors. Governors represent staff and patients and play a key role in holding the Trust Board to account.

They act as a link between members and directors and are responsible for conveying information from the Trust Board to members about affordability, service plans and health improvement initiatives.


Medivir, a pharmaceutical company focused on developing innovative treatments for cancer in areas of high unmet medical need, has appointed Pia Baumann as its new chief medical officer (CMO).

She will be part of the companyā€™s management team and will take up her position on 20 February 2023.
