Our latest Movers and Shakers roundup features plenty of movement within NHS England and a new chief executive for Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex.


Dr Hatim Abdulhussein has been appointed as the new chief executive at Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) after a competitive process. Abdulhussein has been with Health Innovation KSS since 2022 as the Executive Medical Director in a job share with Dr MaryAnn Ferreux.

He is currently also national clinical lead for AI and digital workforce at NHS England and a practising GP. He will be starting his new role in April 2024, alongside his GP work.


NHS England has appointed a new director to implement its commercial strategy. Fiona Hilton has been made director of commercial best practice and engagement at the central commercial function, taking over from David Williams, who left last year.

Hilton joined the NHS from the private sector in 2020. She will lead work to deliver a new procurement and commercial strategy for the NHS launched in November 2023.


Homerton Healthcare Foundation Trust has promoted Bas Sadiq, who joined the NHS as an outpatient receptionist 20 years ago, to chief executive.

Sadiq will replace Louise Ashley,Ā who is retiring after 18 months in the top jobĀ at the East London provider of acute and community services. Sadiq has also been appointed as the place-based leader for City and Hackney Health and Care Partnership.


A Treasury adviser has been appointed to head up a new NHS England team whose work will feed into future spending review negotiations.

Adam Memon is currently a special economic adviser to chancellor Jeremy Hunt, and has held similar roles advising Sajid Javid and Kwasi Kwarteng, as well as working for Javid when he was health secretary.


The strategy director of an acute trust has resigned after being suspended by the Nursing and Midwifery Council for dishonesty over a ā€œrepeated period of timeā€.

David Ainsworth, who was director of strategy and partnerships at Sherwood Forest Hospitals Foundation Trust and a registered nurse, was the subject of a fitness to practise misconduct hearing last week by the nursing regulator.


Peter Ridley, NHS England national director, has been hired to lead Portsmouth Hospitals University Trust as ā€œchief officerā€. He was previously number two to Julian Kelly as deputy chief finance officer at NHSE.


Aston Medical SchoolĀ has appointed Dr Gail Parsons as a new honorary associate professor on its nursing studies degree teaching team.

Dr Parsons is a nurse consultant in trauma and orthopaedics at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust. She was the first nurse consultant at the trust and has held the position since 2006.


CliniThink has appointed Mark Johnson as its new chief executive officer. He joins following successful leadership positions at Amazon Web Services and Microsoft and succeeds Dr Chris Tackaberry, who co-founded the company and will continue to lead its work in life sciences and population health.
