Remedy Healthcare Solutions has become the first UK insourced clinical services provider to install GI Genius AI intelligence endoscopy machines to help support early detection and treatment of colorectal cancer.

The technology has been installed at the company’s modular units in Blackpool Victoria, Cumberland Infirmary and Royal Gwent Hospitals.

Designed by medical device company, Medtronic, the technology uses artificial intelligence to improve polyp detection during a colonoscopy.

The GI Genius device was the subject of the COLO-DETECT study, in which the following nine trusts across the country participated:

  • South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust
  • Northumbria NHS Healthcare Trust
  • North Tees and Hartlepool Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust
  • Bolton NHS Foundation Trust
  • University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust

It is able to increase detection rates by 14% in the case of adenoma (a specific type of polyp), which in turn is improving the rate of detection for colorectal cancer. According to the company, every 1% increase in the adenoma detection rate leads to a 3% reduction in interval bowel cancers.

Dr Steve Fox, clinical development director at Remedy, said: “Our patients have always been at the heart of everything we do, and this cutting-edge technology will empower our clinical teams to detect colorectal cancers at an earlier stage.

“It’s a huge step forward for Remedy’s endoscopy service and we are looking forward to seeing the positive impact of this revolutionary equipment for many years to come.”

As in most areas of the NHS waiting lists for endoscopy services have increased significantly since Covid-19. Earlier diagnosis helps to ensure patients can access vital care and treatment as soon as possible, boosting health outcomes.

James Wood, UK and Ireland country manager for gastrointestinal at Medtronic, said: “Medtronic is delighted to partner with Remedy by supplying our unique Artificial Intelligence technology – GI Genius.

“It is a privilege to have been selected as the preferred provider of an Al solution aimed at detecting colorectal lesions and to support such an innovative healthcare organisation focused on delivering the highest possible levels of care to patients.”
