The latest Digital Health News industry roundup includes TidalSense raising money to build out its diagnostics system, Paige introducing advanced integration capabilities to its platform and Excelerate taking NHS England and an ambulance trust to court.

TidalSense raises Ā£7.5m

Cambridge-based healthtech (formerly Cambridge Respiratory Innovations) TidalSense has raised Ā£7.5 million, led by BGF and Downing. The company is using AI to produce diagnostics and monitoring solutions for respiratory diseases.

It has created a handheld medical device called N-Tidal that uses patented sensor technology and AI to diagnose COPD within a few minutes, with asthma soon to follow.

The capital will be used to build out the company’s diagnostics business further, targeting the primary care and diagnosis provider market in the UK.

In England alone, respiratory diseases affect one in five people and are the third biggest cause of death. According to NHS England, the annual economic burden of COPD and asthma are estimated at Ā£4.9 billion, with the majority of costs associated with hospitalisations.

Early detection and diagnosis have the potential to slow the trajectory of the disease and reduce these costs. Globally, the COPD and asthma diagnostics and monitoring market is estimated to be $8.2 billion p/a.

Paige introduces advanced integration capabilities to its platform

Paige, a global leader in end-to-end digital pathology solutions and clinical AI applications that assist in diagnosing cancer, today introduced new advanced integration capabilities to the Paige Platform, a holistic web-based solution that enables complete digital pathology workflows and supports the evolving needs of todayā€™s modern lab.

With Paigeā€™s flexible platform at the nexus of the digital pathology ecosystem, labs and pathologists can connect their existing and future digital pathology applications into a single environment managed by Paige. The Platformā€™s flexibility is powered by a set of APIs that allow for unlimited vendor-neutral integrationsā€‹ and enable custom workflows to be built on top of Paigeā€™s already robust native capabilities.

In addition to integrating within the workflow, the solution enables seamless access to both Paigeā€™s AI solutions and third-party AI applications. This helps to support labs in taking an iterative approach to digital pathology adoption, reducing upfront investment, avoiding vendor lock-in and making the digital transition a frictionless experience for the entire pathology department.

Excelerate takes legal action against NHS England and ambulance trust
Technology company Excelerate is taking NHS England and an ambulance trust to court over alleged bias in a tender.
In claim papers filed at the Technology and Construction Court (part of the High Court), Excelerate Technology said it was sent a secret WhatsApp recording of a crucial meeting which, it alleges, shows West Midlands Ambulance Service University Foundation Trust and NHS England were ā€œconsciously biased against itā€ and ā€œwere intent on reducing and eventually eliminat[ing]ā€ its future involvement as a supplier.
The company, which provides communications technology for emergency response vehicles, is claiming the procurement for the national ambulance resilience team (known as NARU) ā€“ which is hosted by WMAS and funded by NHSE ā€“ showed misfeasance in public office by WMAS and NHSE. Excelerate also alleges WMAS breached contract and procurement law.
The court papers show the company is alleging ā€œunlawfulā€ decisions made by NARU, under the management of procurement manager Laura Johnson, ā€œcan only be explained by deliberate decisions to act unlawfully or by conscious recklessness to whether WMASā€™s conduct was unlawfulā€, while Mike Shanahan, NHSEā€™s deputy director of resilience, was biased against the company and refused to take steps to prevent or rectify WMASā€™s conduct.
The recording allegedly contains a remark made during a meeting about being biased against Excelerate. In NHSEā€™s court submission, it suggests Mr Shanahan did make the remark but ā€œin jestā€, and it was followed by laughter from others in the room.
Excelerate alleges Ms Johnson then said this remark should not be minuted. WMAS argues that, if this happened, it would have been appropriate to say something said as a joke should not be minuted.
