Midlands event explores how Covid-19 has changed the digital landscape
Birmingham Community Healthcare will provide a unified child health information service for the West Midlands using System Cā€™s CarePlus.

Making sure the NHS has the right structures built so it does not fall back into the old ways of working is crucial when it comes to digital tools.

That was one theme raised during the Digital Health Network: Midlands regional event on August 17.

A number of digital leaders from the region discussed responses to Covid-19 ā€“ from the shielding programme to the quick shift to remote working.

Like the rest of the UK, health organisations in the Midlands have experienced a rush for digital tools and questions are now being asked as to how this can be maintained as the country emerges from the pandemic.

According to one digital leader there is a ā€œdanger of falling back to old waysā€ which is why the NHS needs to ā€œmake sure the right structures are built nowā€.

Other themes discussed included the need for integrated systems; why the pandemic may push the case for an integrated electronic patient record (EPR) higher up the agenda; and the importance of listening to patients and clinicians.

Reflecting on what had been achieved during the pandemic, one digital leader said coronavirus had highlighted that, while it may be seen as boring, ā€œgetting the basics rightā€ is vital.

Another reflection has been to make sure the current high energy levels for digital is ā€œharnessedā€.

After a short webinar break ā€“ we will be back in September, starting with a session on how NHS trusts can learn how to securely migrate to Microsoft 365 on September 2.
