Clinical teams at two London hospitals using new Covid-19 software
- 11 May 2020
A new piece of software is helping clinical teams at Northwick Park and Ealing Hospitals monitor and track the progress of Covid-19 patients in intensive care.
Pathpoint ICU is based on digitising various patient pathways without being specialty specific.
It allows large numbers of patients to be tracked and reviewed with up-to-date handover information immediately available to clinical staff during shift changes. It also has the ability to group patients into cohorts based on changes in their condition.
The software was developed by Open Medical founder and orthopedic registrar Harry Lykostratis. It was adapted in less than a fortnight by Lykostratis, who had developed a similar tool to manage orthopaedic patients.
Northwick Park was one of the first hospitals to treat Covid-19 patients and has since discharged more than 800 patients including one of its own A&E nurses.
The hospital and Ealing hospitals form part of the London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.
Tariq Husain, clinical lead for intensive care at the trust, said: “It’s been an incredibly helpful tool for us born out of crisis and will almost certainly continue to be used within intensive care when the current Covid-19 pandemic ends.
“The past two months has been the most extraordinary in my medical career and the sheer volume of critically ill patients we’ve been dealing with makes tracking patients quickly and efficiently invaluable.”
A number of digital tools and software have already been rolled out at Northwick Park, including Infinity Health’s e-portering app to replace the existing practice of staff filling out a two-page request form.
