January’s movers and shakers notes appointments from a number of NHS trusts and healthcare organisations, including South Tees and Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust, Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust, Now Healthcare and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has named Ann Farrar as interim chief executive ahead of a permanent appointment in April.

She succeeded Karen Jackson on 17 January and will remain with the trust until Silas Nicholls joins as permanent chief executive. Ann was CEO of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust from 2012 until early 2016, when she returned to work with the NHS in the North East.

Matthew Shaw has been appointed to take over the position of medical director at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

In his new role, Matthew will be the executive lead for patient and staff safety and clinical quality within the hospital, providing professional leadership to the medical body at GOSH. His role will see him responsible for postgraduate medical education and training for doctors, medical workforce development and partnership services.

Peter Steer, CEO of GOSH, said: “We look forward to welcoming Matthew to Great Ormond Street Hospital next year. He comes to us with a wealth of experience that will be of huge benefit to both the staff and patients at GOSH.”

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has waved in Alan Downey as its new chairman.

Downey joins the trust after acting as non-executive director at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. His appointment was confirmed by the trust’s council of governors in December after an extensive selection process.

He will take up his position from acting chairman Amanda Hullick at the end of March 2018.

Downey said: “South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has a reputation for high performance, continuous improvement, innovation and system leadership in order to deliver the best possible outcomes for the people and communities it serves.

“I feel inspired by this role and am delighted to support the chief executive and her team in delivering the next phase of the trust’s journey in delivering world class healthcare as we respond to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.”

Meanwhile, Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has welcomed Cathy Woffendin as its new director of nursing and professions.

Woffendin, currently deputy director of nursing, children’s and specialist services at Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, will join the trust in March. She has worked in a variety of organisations both within the NHS and private sector for ten years and has also acted as a staff governor, after being appointed in 2015 when Bradford District Care became a Foundation Trust.

She said: “I’m really thrilled to be joining Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. I’m extremely passionate about improving care for patients and their families and I know that I’m joining a trust which has great staff and is ambitious about delivering patient-centred care.”

Digital healthcare company Now Healthcare Group has promoted Tim Ng to chief operating officer.

Ng previously acted as CTO of the MediaCityUK-based company, which boasts almost 20 million customers across its two main products, Now Patient and Now GP.

CEO and founder of Now Healthcare Group, Lee Dentith said: “Tim has been pivotal in helping us to get where we are today, from attracting financial investment to developing the Now Healthcare Group app products.

“He has a great background in succession planning and in growing businesses from an operational level and that combined with his technical knowledge make him a perfect fit to help us on the next part of our business journey.”
