InterSystems triumphs in Welsh labs deal

  • 21 June 2010

InterSystems is set to be confirmed as the winner of a national contract to provide a new laboratory information management system across Wales.

Although no official announcement has yet been made E-Health Insider understands that InterSystems, bidding its TrakCare Lab product, has seen off strong competition from Cerner and iSoft to win the £7.9m contact to provide a national networked pathology system across Wales.

Informing Healthcare were unable to comment on the deal but said they were likely to make a formal announcement next week.

The deal will see the 13 computer systems that are currently operating in the 18 main laboratories in Wales replaced with one integrated system that will enable a single pathology record for each patient and support new ways of working.

The new system will also be required to deliver improved management and tracking of samples and better access to workload information for service planning.

If confirmed the deal will be a coup for InterSystems, which in January won the Scottish national Patient Management Systems (PMS) procurement with its TrakCare product.

An InterSystems win in the Welsh labs procurement would also be a set-back for iSoft the current supplier of LIMS systems to most pathology labs in Wales.

During the procurement suppliers have showcased their products at road shows across Wales. More than 100 health staff attended the events, which allowed them to review and provide feedback to Informing Healthcare.
