Message board for patients with diabetes

  • 19 November 2008

A volunteer with the charity Diabetes UK has launched a message board for patients with the long term condition.

The message board, Diabetes Support: talking blood sugars, has received financial support from Diabetes UK. It enables people with diabetes to exchange knowledge and experiences with other people with the condition, their family and carers. It is one of the first of its kind in the UK, but follows a US model.

Kati Wilson, who has type 1 diabetes, set up the message board following her own personal experiences.

She said: “The idea for the message board came when I was having a huge problem with high blood sugars after sport. Despite consulting my diabetes team, the best advice I got was from a US diabetes message board, which was the only one I could find for people with diabetes at the time.”

Wilson said the message board aimed to help people who felt they were on their own with diabetes and who were not a member of a diabetes group of Diabetes UK.

She added: “Doctors are great clinicians but people living with diabetes have a huge experience and the aim is to build up an online community where people can ask questions and share their knowledge and experiences.”
