Platform for wearable health devices launched
- 30 July 2008
Irish developer Realtime Technologies has launched a new hardware research platform called Shimmer, designed for wearable health sensing in both connected and wireless environments.
Shimmer stands for Sensing Health with Intelligence, Modularity, Mobility, and Experimental Reusability, and uses Intel technology to help find new ways to monitor vital signs from devices worn by patients.
Using removable storage capacity and low-power standards-based wireless communication technologies, the application can work with devices to monitor movements and stream data collected to other applications.
Realtime say they have had global interest in the project and shipments have already begun following a pilot study developed by the Technology Research for Independent Living (TRIL) centre located in Dublin, Ireland.
Researchers at the TRIL Centre have already used Shimmer to reduce the time spent developing core foundation technologies.
Realtime Technologies say the development of Shimmer is a significant opportunity to feed the research ecosystem that ultimately serves to improve patient care and quality of life.
CEO of the company, Paddy White, added: "We are excited to be working with Intel and we look forward to bringing Shimmer to a broader market. It’s an excellent example of how an industry leader such as Intel can work with specialised companies like Realtime to collaborate on product development and improve time-to-market for enabling new technology."
E-Health Europe reported in March that the TRIL centre in Dublin, had opened a new clinic, supported by Intel and the Industrial Development Agency Ireland, which aims to discover and deliver technology to support independent ageing.
