Large scale MiSys EPR goes live in Saudi

Saudi Arabia’s National Guard Health Affairs (NGHA), the healthcare facility for the Saudi Arabian military police, has gone live with an electronic patient record system from IT solutions firm Misys.

Misys CPR will cover members of the National Guard and their dependents. The company claims that the system will be one of the biggest clinical information management systems in the Middle East.

“The installation of Misys CPR represents a significant advancement in clinical technology for the Saudi Arabian National Guard Health Affairs,” said Dr Majid Al Tuwaijri, chief information officer at the NGHA. "Our ability to manage and analyse large amounts of patient data in order to develop a truly patient-centre healthcare organisation has been greatly enhanced."

The electronic patient record system will also incorporate medical imaging, and respiratory and critical care. Similar systems for pharmacies in the NGHA, which will incorporate electronic transfer of prescriptions and drug databases, will be implemented in December. A data outcomes management and decision support tool, Misys Data Warehouse, is due to go live this month.

A spokesperson for Misys told E-Health Insider that aspects of the system had been adapted for the use of Arabic, such as printing and reporting, and that the company had experience of implementing such software in the Middle East in the past.

The six hospitals and numerous primary care centres across the country that form the NGHA employ 3,500 clinicians and include the King Fahad National Guard Hospital, a 691-bed facility and part of the King Abdulaziz Medical city in the capital Riyadh. People who are not members or dependents of the National Guard can still be treated at the hospitals for a fee.

Dr Abdullah Al Rabeeah, CEO of National Guard Health Affairs, said: "In continuation of NGHA’s success in promoting and elevating the quality of healthcare within the Kingdom, we recognised the need to implement an advanced clinical information management system that would support all areas of our organisation."

Duane Lawrence, general manager of Misys Healthcare Systems International, said: "Misys Healthcare Systems has always been associated with ground-breaking, highly complex clinical information systems, and our global resources enable us to support world-class sites such as NGHA."
