IDX chooses SeeBeyond to integrate UCLH

  • 10 February 2004

IDX Systems Corporation UK, has chosen SeeBeyond’s eGate product to provide the integration platform for the comprehensive electronic patient care record system it is installing at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust (UCLH).

The announcement comes a week after BT awarded SeeBeyond a £16 million seven-year contract to provide the core software for the transactional messaging service for the ‘data spine’ at the heart of the NHS Care Records Service.

In September 2003 UCLH awarded a £70 million contract to IDX and its partner LogicaCMG to provide a full electronic patient record system for the trust in what was the largest single IT deal signed by an NHS Trust.  The deal was signed outside the National Programme for IT.

Under the contract IDX will implement its LastWord enterprise clinical solution across UCLH’s eight hospitals, which cover five sites and have more than 1,000 hospital beds.  The sites for implementation will include UCLH’s prestigious new Euston Road health campus now under construction in central London.

The £422m Private Finance Initiative (PFI)-build hospital currently being built on Euston Road in central London, which replaces University College Hospital and the Middlesex Hospital has been designed as a ‘paperless hospital’ and is due to open in spring 2005.

SeeBeyond’s eGate platform will be used by IDX to simplify connectivity issues between applications and provide secure, rapid and once-only delivery of critical patient information to those that need it.

SeeBeyond says its eGate platform will provide IDX with a comprehensive standards-based integration solution to enable the different clinical systems, applications in use at UCLH to be integrated into a single electronic care record system. The eGate platform will link UCLH’s past and current technology investments, and enable future flexibility.

“SeeBeyond offers the most robust, unified integration platform on the market and gives us the ability to implement a truly integrated clinical information system," said Trevor Stanley, Managing Director of IDX UK Ltd.

“This partnership will provide UCLH with a proven integrated information platform with clinically rich functionality to provide UCLH with the best quality of integrated health and social care for its patients."

“We are delighted to be supporting IDX to offer the very best in clinical healthcare to patients at UCLH," said David Bennett, Senior Vice President of EMEA for SeeBeyond.

“This deployment, coupled with our recent selection by BT to provide the integration technology to support a national patient record database and transactional messaging service for UK’s NHS, further strengthens SeeBeyond’s position as the leading provider of integration solutions to the healthcare market."

IDX is BT’s main clinical application provider for the London ‘cluster’ of the National programme for IT.  BT is also working closely with Fujitsu and IDX in the Southern Cluster.
