  • 28 January 2004

Fujitsu Services has provided further details of the members of its Local Service Provider (LSP) consortia line-up, following Monday’s announcement that it had been awarded the LSP contract for the South of England.

The team, known as the Fujitsu Alliance, comprises Fujitsu as prime contractor; IDX Systems Corporation for the core clinical application; Tata Consultancy Services, a division of Indian conglomerate TATA Sons, for clinical application implementation and data migration; PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP for security and training; and BT for systems integration.

Tata Consultancy Services will provide clinical application implementation and data migration. The Tata Consultancy Services Healthcare Group provides comprehensive IT consulting and end-to-end IT solutions to industry and government.

PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP will provide security and controls expertise and a range of coaching, facilitation and training skills to support deployment of HR and training services.

BT meanwhile will design, build and test the integrated systems solution which will provide the care record service throughout the region.  As reported last week by E-Health Insider BT as LSP in London and Fujitsu in the South, both of which are offering IDX as their main clinical application provider, will share a common systems architecture.

Tim Smart of BT said, "BT is very pleased to be working with Fujitsu in this programme.  BT brings not only skill & commitment but also some powerful synergies with its other work within the National Programme."

Under the £896m contact, which runs to 2013, Fujitsu will introduce electronic patient records throughout the region, integrating existing electronic records where possible, and implementing new systems when appropriate. Training will be provided to ensure the full benefits of the system are realised.

The Southern cluster is the largest region in the English NHS with a population of 12,838,000, 256,000 NHS staff across 7 Strategic Health Authorities, 12 NHS Ambulance Trusts, 19 Mental Health and Community Trusts, 43 Acute Trusts, 82 Primary Care Trusts and 1,938 GP practices.

The cluster which stretches from Dover to Lands End includes: Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire Somerset and Dorset, Avon, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Devon and Cornwall.

"Authorised NHS staff, such as GPs or hospital clinicians, will have access to a patient’s NHS Care Record from any location in England, allowing healthcare workers to access the right information instantly, from hospital to GP surgery. This will make a real difference to clinicians by increasing the time they can spend on patient care," said David Courtley, chief operating officer of Fujitsu Services.

Courtley added: "Fujitsu has assembled the players needed to ensure the NHS derives the benefits it expects from this ambitious modernisation programme. We recognise that our role is to enable the Southern region to make the dramatic improvements in healthcare this programme envisages."

Commenting on the award of the contract to Fujitsu Richard Granger, director general of NHS IT said, "Fujitsu’s commitment to this project has been clearly demonstrated throughout the procurement process and I look forward to working with them to deliver a world-class solution to patients and healthcare professionals alike."

Headquartered in London, Fujitsu Services is the European-centred IT services arm of the Fujitsu Group.  The Fujitsu Group is a US$38 billion provider of IT systems and services for the global marketplace.
