UK Nursing Portal Reaches Milestone

NMAP – The UK’s gateway to high quality Internet resources in Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health – has announced that it has served over one million pages of information since its launch in April 2001.

By the end of January the figure had actually reached: 1,090,949.

Over 1100 records are now included in the database, each of which gives details of the Internet resource, and includes the title, URL and a short description.

Each record is also classified and indexed to make then easy to find. Any search or browse of the service will also search for records on the OMNI database (part of BIOME).

BIOME is a health, medical and life sciences Internet gateway designed to enhance learning, research and professional development by equipping Internet users with simple and effective access to high quality Internet resources.

Over 2500 Web sites around the world now link to the NMAP portal.

To help the current staff, including those from the Universities of Nottingham & Sheffield, Royal College of Nurses, Royal College of Midwives, increase the number of resources available, a full time service officer has now taken up her post within the BIOME team.

During November and December 2001 some 600 NMAP users were polled to help evaluate the service, and further developments of the portal will be informed by their comments.
